Announcements at this Weekend’s Masses, October 12/13, 2024

Today we celebrate The Twenty-Eight Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B. Welcome and welcome to everyone who joins us by radio on 98.5FM.

October is the Month of the Rosary. The rosary is prayed each morning in St. Mary’s Parish Church at 9.00am before the 9.30am Mass and at 7.00pm on Mondays before the 7.30pm Novena Mass. Rosary beads and leaflets are available, free of charge, at Our Lady’s Shrine here in St. Mary’s. It is hoped that schools will pray a decade of the rosary each day, so that at the end of each week during October they will have prayed a set of the mysteries of the rosary.

Feasts this week include St. Teresa of Avila on Tuesday next, 15th October and St. Luke, the gospel writer on Friday next, 18th October.

Next Sunday, 20th October is Mission Sunday. This year’s theme is “Go and Invite Everyone to the Banquet,” reflecting the inclusive and urgent call to bring God’s love to everyone. A second collection for the support of the missions will be taken up at all Masses next weekend. For those using the weekly collection envelopes please bring the special Mission Sunday Collection envelope. The money from this collection which is taken up in every parish in the world benefits 1,150 territories where the Gospel has not yet been received, has been only recently embraced, or is courageously upheld in the face of persecution.

The Novena to Our Mother of Perpetual Help continues each until Monday, 28th October at 7.30pm. No 9.30am Mass on Mondays during the novena.

The October 2024 Parish Newsletter is available in the church and porches. It includes articles on Blessed Carlo Acutis’ Devotion to Our Lady and 10 Good Reasons to Go to Mass. There is also a separate leaflet available with the 10 Good Reasons to Go to Mass. The next 3 are: 4. God has a special message for us; 5. We need to talk to God; 6. People need our prayers. It would be good to share a copy of this leaflet with others.

These announcements may be read on the parish website: www.dungarvanparish.ie

Parish notes are included each week in the two local newspapers.

10 Good Reasons to Go to Mass

Whether you’re 8 years old or in your 80s, at some point in your life you’ve probably struggled with the question, “Why do we have to go to Mass?” If you feel like skipping Mass, here are 10 good reasons to go:

  1. God asks us to make one day holy. God asks us to set aside one day to refocus physically, mentally and spiritually. We live in a secular world. Going to Mass helps us to see everything from a different perspective.
  2. Jesus gives us the gift of himself. When we go to Mass, we are doing what Jesus commanded his followers to do. It is a command to love and to be loved by God.
  3. We need to be a part of community. When we come together at Mass to pray and worship God, we fulfil a deep need inside of us to be in communion with other people.
  4. God has a special message for us. When we listen to the readings, the homily and the prayers of the Mass, God speaks to us in a special way.
  5. We need to talk to God. When we go to Mass, we speak to God through our singing, our communal responses and prayer, and our personal prayers from the depths of our hearts.
  6. People need our prayers. We can pray for other people anytime, but when we pray for others during Mass, we pray in a special way.
  7. We need to stand up for what we believe. Being a follower of Jesus is counter-cultural. At every Mass, we have the opportunity to stand up and proclaim what we believe publicly.

Prayers

Pope Francis’ Prayer to Our Lady
O Mary,
You shine continuously on our journey
as a sign of salvation and hope.
We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick,
who, at the foot of the cross,
were united with Jesus’ suffering,
and persevered in your faith.
“Protectress of the Roman people”,
you know our needs,
and we know that you will provide,
so that, as at Cana in Galilee,
joy and celebration may return
after this time of trial.
Help us, Mother of Divine Love,
to conform ourselves to the will of the Father
and to do what Jesus tells us.
For he took upon himself our suffering,
and burdened himself with our sorrows
to bring us, through the cross,
to the joy of the Resurrection. Amen.
We fly to your protection, O Holy Mother of God;
Do not despise our petitions in our necessities, but deliver us always
from every danger, O Glorious and Blessed Virgin.
